Advanced DNA testing has confirmed serial killer Ted Bundy murdered 17-year-old Melissa Ann Smith in Utah 50 years ago, finally closing a cold case that haunted investigators for decades. The breakthrough demonstrates how preserved evidence continues delivering justice long after criminals face their final punishment.
DNA Evidence Seals the Case
Summit County Attorney Margaret Olson announced investigators are satisfied Bundy killed Smith in 1974. A highly similar DNA profile linked to the executed killer was found in evidence from Smith’s autopsy, according to Utah County Sergeant Mike Reynolds. The case shows why law enforcement must preserve evidence from unsolved crimes, even when suspects remain unknown for years.
Smith’s death displayed all the hallmarks of Bundy’s known pattern, including his methods, motives and opportunity to commit the crime. The high school senior disappeared near the end of October 1974, shortly after Bundy moved to Salt Lake City. Deer hunters discovered her bludgeoned body days later. Authorities have contacted Smith’s next of kin, none of whom still live in Utah.
Bundy’s Reign of Terror
Bundy murdered at least 30 women and girls across multiple states during the 1970s, though many more survived his attacks with injuries. His victims included college students who vanished from sorority houses and parks, creating nationwide fear. Despite his heinous crimes, Bundy drew fascination because many considered him charming and handsome, allowing him to lure unsuspecting victims.
Florida executed Bundy by electric chair in 1989 for the 1978 murders of two women at the Chi Omega sorority house at Florida State University. Before his execution, he confessed to additional crimes previously unknown to police, though authorities have not confirmed all those admissions. His killing spree began by 1974 when young women started disappearing in Washington state.
Justice Delayed But Delivered
Nancy Wilcox, a 16-year-old cheerleader, was believed to be Bundy’s first Utah victim when she vanished on October 2, 1974. Smith disappeared weeks later, becoming another casualty in Bundy’s multi-state murder campaign spanning Utah, Idaho and Colorado. Sergeant Reynolds emphasized the importance of case closures, stating authorities should work to eliminate Bundy’s memory with every solved crime. Though Bundy died 35 years ago, his confirmed victim count continues growing thanks to DNA technology unavailable during his crimes.
