Maine Heating Bills SOAR — Emergency Oil Sought

Maine lawmakers are calling on President Trump to release emergency home heating oil reserves as residents face a staggering 74% price increase compared to last year, with the statewide average reaching $5.77 per gallon.

Bipartisan Appeal From Maine Leaders

Senator Susan Collins and Senator Angus King submitted a letter to President Trump on Tuesday requesting the release of oil from the Northeast Home Heating Oil Reserve. The lawmakers emphasized that Maine families are struggling under the financial burden of soaring heating costs as winter approaches. Collins, a moderate Republican seeking re-election after nearly three decades in the Senate, joined forces with King, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, demonstrating the urgency of the situation across party lines.

According to data from the Maine Department of Energy Resources, heating oil prices have climbed dramatically from $3.32 per gallon in September 2025 to the current $5.77. The senators warned that their state remains particularly vulnerable to global supply disruptions because Maine imports most of its home heating oil from international markets.

Global Conflicts Drive Energy Crisis

The lawmakers attributed the price surge to ongoing international conflicts that have restricted global oil supplies. In their letter, Collins and King pointed to the Middle East conflict and the Russia-Ukraine War as primary factors preventing additional heating oil from reaching world markets. These supply chain disruptions have created severe price shocks for states like Maine that depend heavily on imported fuel for residential heating during harsh winter months.

The heating oil crisis reflects broader national fuel price challenges. The AAA national average for diesel hit a record high of $6.5276 on Tuesday before declining slightly to $6.5141 by Thursday. Regular gasoline prices stood at $4.4825 per gallon on Thursday, still below the $5.0165 record set in June 2022 but significantly elevated compared to historical averages.

What This Means

The request to tap strategic reserves highlights the direct impact of foreign conflicts on American households, particularly in regions dependent on heating oil. Maine residents face difficult choices as they prepare for winter heating expenses that have increased by three-quarters in just one year. The bipartisan nature of the appeal underscores how energy prices transcend political divisions when constituents face economic hardship. The White House had not responded to requests for comment by Thursday, leaving Maine families uncertain about potential relief measures as temperatures drop and heating season begins.
