The U.S. Secret Service disclosed unprecedented nationwide threat levels on the eve of the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Dinner, with protective intelligence cases surging nearly 40% compared to last year and agents opening approximately 10,000 cases since January alone.
Volatile Security Environment
Secret Service Director Sean Curran characterized the current threat landscape as exceptionally dangerous during a security briefing held July 22. “I think the environment has become very volatile, and that’s just across the board,” Curran stated. The 24-year veteran emphasized that the numbers represent levels unprecedented in his entire career with the agency. Deputy Director Matthew Quinn joined Curran in addressing security preparations for the dinner scheduled for July 24.
Secret Service spokesperson Nate Herring confirmed the 40% increase in protective intelligence cases, marking one of the sharpest spikes in recent agency history. Despite these elevated risks, officials assured reporters that special teams and advance security personnel were already positioning resources to ensure a secure event.
Assassination Attempt Prompted Rescheduling
The annual dinner originally took place on April 25, 2026, at the Washington Hilton but was abruptly halted when a gunman charged a security checkpoint in an assassination attempt targeting President Donald Trump. Secret Service agents immediately evacuated the president and first lady while attendees sheltered on the ballroom floor. The incident forced organizers to postpone and relocate the traditional gathering of journalists, celebrities, and political figures.
President Trump announced earlier in July that the rescheduled event would take place at the Waldorf Astoria on Pennsylvania Avenue rather than returning to the historic Washington Hilton venue. Curran noted that Trump has since returned to the Hilton following the April incident, demonstrating the president’s continued public appearances despite ongoing security concerns.
Presidential Security Posture
Quinn emphasized that agents are not treating the rescheduled dinner as simply a repeat event. “We’re looking at this as a presidential site with Cabinet members and other protectees there, just like every site we do everywhere we go,” Quinn explained. Trump has faced multiple assassination attempts and security incidents throughout his political career, according to law enforcement records.
